The SAP Process
Understanding what to expect — step by step.

Your Road Back to Duty
The DOT return-to-duty process follows a clear, structured path. Here is what each stage looks like.
Initial Contact
Reach out to us and share your situation. We'll answer your questions, explain the process, and schedule your evaluation at a time that works for you.
Initial SAP Evaluation
A comprehensive face-to-face clinical assessment. We'll evaluate your situation and determine the appropriate treatment or education recommendations tailored to your needs.

Treatment & Education
Complete the recommended treatment or education program. This varies by individual — we'll connect you with the right resources and support you through this phase.
Follow-Up Evaluation
After completing treatment, meet with our SAP again to verify compliance and determine your readiness to return to safety-sensitive duties.
Return-to-Duty Testing
Complete the required return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test under direct observation, as mandated by DOT regulations.
Back to Work
With clearance from the SAP and a negative return-to-duty test, you're cleared to return to your safety-sensitive position and get back on the road.
Follow-Up Testing
Ongoing follow-up testing as required by DOT regulations. Typically a minimum of 6 directly observed tests in the first 12 months, with possible extension up to 60 months.
What to Expect
Answers to the questions we hear most from drivers and safety-sensitive employees starting this process.
How long does the process take?
The timeline depends on your individual situation and the treatment or education recommended. The initial evaluation takes about 1-2 hours. The full process — from first contact to return-to-duty clearance — typically takes several weeks to a few months.
What does it cost?
SAP evaluation fees vary depending on your specific needs. We'll provide transparent pricing upfront during your initial contact so there are no surprises. Treatment and education costs are separate and depend on the program recommended.
Is it confidential?
Absolutely. Your evaluation, treatment records, and personal information are protected under strict federal confidentiality regulations (42 CFR Part 2). We take your privacy extremely seriously.
Will my employer know?
Your employer will only receive the information required by DOT regulations — specifically, your compliance status and treatment recommendations. The details of your evaluation and personal disclosures remain confidential.
